North Hill Cinerama & Fairview Bowling Lanes - YouTube

Calgary's North Hill Cinerama (Cineplex Odeon Theatre) was torn down in the fall of 1999 to make room for the renovation / expansion of North Hill Centre Shopping Mall.Lights dim for last time at North Hill Cinema:(Dudley, Wendy. Calgary Herald 29 Aug 1999: D1 / FRONT.)The last picture show at the North Hill movie house will run tonight, ending an era of big-screen and big-sound cinema in Calgary. The final credits on Star Wars' Phantom Menace will usher out a theatre which embraced audiences with its wrap-around screen and digital sound system.Since its first film -- Valley of the Dolls, which opened Dec. 21, 1967 -- movie-goers have left the North Hill cinema feeling like they have danced with wolves, fought to save Private Ryan, walked the sands with Gandhi, and journeyed upriver into Col. Kurtz's apocalyptic heart of darkness."It's such a great screen, with great ambience. You always felt like you were right there," said Rob Spragins, taking in Saturday evening's Star Wars screening with his son James, 14."This theatre is a real landmark in Calgary. I'll be sorry to see it go."The 32-year-old movie house, which seats just under 800 people, is being demolished to make room for the North Hill Centre expansion."I'll be the last person in here, making the final walk- through," said theatre manager Andrea Harper. "I'm sure there will be tears." Harper's favourite flick is the Phantom Menace which she has watched 12 times."You have to see movies on a big screen so they have an impact on you," said Gail Dezengoski, 34, who remembers attending the theatre as a youngster with her parents. "This is really the Star Wars of all theatres. It's an epic and it's dynamic," she said."I saw Saving Private Ryan here and it was freaky," added Audrey Jackson. "It was like it was all around you."Its walls now empty of movie posters, the theatre hosted a line of well-wishers Saturday, many coming to pay their last respects."We saw the original Star Wars here and all the others, so we've come to see the final one," said Bob Day, 46. "Nostalgia is part of this."Epic films are out of place on the small screens in multiplexes, said Bob's wife, Debbie. The couple has attended the North Hill cinema for more than 20 years, recalling the in-your-face viewings of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange, Dances With Wolves and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."This theatre will definitely be missed. The matchbox theatres just aren't the same," said Bob. "With a big audience, you get more reaction. It's part of the experience."For Kevin Morey, the theatre is a memory of his teenage years, when he and his high-school buddies crammed into a car and headed to the movies to watch Dirty Harry gun down the world. "It was the sound quality that made it. I remember Apocalypse Now really well."Sitting in the theatre tonight will be Dave Gulevich and his eight-year-old son, Brett. "There's nothing like it, you're right there in the movie," he said, while buying his final screening ticket Saturday. "So I just had to be here on the last night."
